Jackie
screening + live score
June 3, 2017

JACKIE is a weirdly underrated film. In the same way that Billy Crudup’s unnamed journalist character not-so-subtly condescends to Jackie Kennedy throughout their interview in the movie, JACKIE the film was not-so-subtly discussed by critics on the basis of everything but its merits. Maybe this shouldn’t be surprising: as a film made by a foreign-born director, and carried by the performances of two women — Natalie Portman, as the title character, and by Mica Levi’s unforgettable score — JACKIE stands counter to more than a few trends sadly prevailing in the U.S. today.

On Saturday, June 3, Nederlander Concerts and Wordless Music present the world premiere live score for Pablo Larraín’s JACKIE (2016), performed by the Wordless Music Orchestra, and led by conductor Jayce Ogren at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Set to an unforgettable soundtrack by composer Mica Levi, JACKIE garnered the first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score for music written by a female composer in twenty years.

JACKIE is a searing and intimate portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic First Lady, then Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Natalie Portman). JACKIE places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband’s assassination. Known for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband’s legacy and the world of “Camelot” that they created and loved so well.

Having performed both the U.S. premiere of Mica’s previous score (to Jonathan Glazer’s UNDER THE SKIN) and the world premiere of Paul Thomas Anderson’s PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE (with Jon Brion and Joanna Newsom) in L.A., it’s a privilege to return to The Theatre at Ace Hotel with Wordless Music Orchestra on behalf of what was truly the most striking original score of last year, and one of the most haunting films in recent memory.

Mica Levi (Micachu) is a London based artist, composer and music producer. Mica studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music, garnering her first classical commission from the London Philharmonic at age 20. Her iconic score for Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin won the European Film Award, the Los Angeles Film Critcs Award and was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Music. Mica was also the youngest artist in residence at London’s Southbank Center and has performed at major art institutions worldwide including the Getty, MoMA PS1 and the Barbican.

JACKIE is directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Noah Oppenheim. In addition to Academy Award® winner Portman, the film stars Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup, and Academy Award® nominee John Hurt. JACKIE is produced by Juan De Dios Larraín, Darren Aronofsky, Mickey Liddell, Scott Franklin, and Ari Handel.
